Let’s talk about life’s “tricks and treats.” Now, I’m not just talking about Halloween (though its today, so it fits). I mean the unexpected little surprises and shocks that get tossed at us year-round—the sweet and the sour of it all. Living your hero life isn’t just about enjoying the treats, it’s about handling the tricks with the kind of grace that keeps you going strong.
Treats: The Sweet Spots
We all love the treats—those golden moments when life just clicks. Like when you nail that project, or when your kid, out of the blue, says “Thanks for being you.” Or maybe it’s simpler, like finding a $5 bill in your jacket pocket from last winter. These are the moments that make us feel on top of the world.
One of my favorite “treats” came last year when I took a day off to relax, only to discover that my favorite band was playing a surprise gig at a local spot. You know that warm feeling when something unexpectedly goes your way? That’s what the treats are all about. And if we’re being honest, sometimes we spend a lot of our time chasing after these moments. But treats, as sweet as they are, can only take us so far.
Tricks: Life’s Not-So-Sweet Surprises
Then there are the tricks, those curveballs that make us feel like life’s got a bit of a dark sense of humor. Like when you’re running late, and every light is red, or that one time I had a presentation ready and my computer decided it had other plans (cue the blue screen of doom). It’s as if life’s telling you, “Bet you didn’t see this coming!”
I had a recent “trick” moment where I’d planned a quiet weekend, only to find out my sprinkler system need to be replaced. Just when you’re planning to slow down, life says, “Hold my coffee.” But here’s where the magic happens—living your hero life means learning to dodge, duck, and sometimes even dance with these tricks.
So, How Do We Embrace Both?
1. Expect the Unexpected: Life’s a grab bag; you never know what you’ll pull out. Keeping an open mind and accepting that things won’t always go as planned is part of being prepared. It’s like keeping an umbrella in your bag when the weather’s fine—just in case.
2. Savor the Treats Without Needing Them: While it’s human to love those sweet spots, don’t get hung up on them. The treats are like sprinkles on your favorite dessert—they’re fun, but not the main thing. Try to be grateful for each one without letting it become the reason for your happiness.
3. Roll with the Tricks: It might sound strange, but learning to laugh when things go south is one of the best life skills there is. I mean, come on, the day the basement flooded? After the initial frustration, it made for a great story and a stronger appreciation for working plumbing. It’s all in the way you look at it!
Let the Tricks Shape You
We often think of heroes as people who are always winning. But let’s get real—no one goes through life without a few bruises. What if you reframed each trick not as an obstacle but as training for your hero life? Each challenge is like a new level in a video game, just making you better for whatever comes next.
Heroes don’t dwell on why things didn’t work out—they pivot, adapt, and keep going. And that, my friends, is where the real hero work happens. It’s easy to enjoy life’s treats; it takes courage and resilience to turn life’s tricks into teachable moments.
So, Here’s Your Hero-Life Game Plan:
Keep chasing the treats, but don’t let the tricks trip you up. Life’s full of surprises, both sweet and sour, and living your hero life means embracing every last one of them. Next time a trick sneaks up, remind yourself that this, too, is part of the journey. Treat it like an adventure, one that’s building you into a stronger, wiser, more resilient version of yourself.
And when the next treat rolls around, let yourself savor it, knowing you’ve earned it. Because every trick you’ve handled and every treat you’ve celebrated has gotten you to this exact moment—and there’s no place more heroic than right here, right now.
