In 1993, legendary basketball coach Jim Valvano delivered one of the most powerful speeches ever heard at the ESPYS. His message was simple but profound: to truly live, there are three things you should do every single day—laugh, think, and have your emotions moved to tears.
Valvano said that if you do these three things, you’ve had a full day. And if you string enough of those days together, you create something truly special.
1. Laugh
Laughter is life’s reset button. It lightens the load, brings people together, and reminds us not to take everything so seriously. Whether it’s a silly joke, a funny memory, or just laughing at yourself, make space for joy each day.
2. Think
Take time to reflect. Ask yourself the big questions. Challenge your own assumptions. Thinking deeply isn’t just about solving problems—it’s about understanding yourself and the world around you. Growth starts with thought.
3. Cry
Tears remind us we’re alive. They come from love, joy, sorrow, or gratitude. Don’t hold them back—let your heart feel fully. When your emotions move you, you connect to something greater than yourself.
Living Your Hero Life
Living your hero life isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being present. Laughing often, thinking deeply, and feeling openly keeps you grounded in what matters most.
As Jim Valvano said, “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.” His challenge wasn’t just about fighting illness—it was about embracing life.
So today, ask yourself: have you laughed, thought, and cried? If not, there’s still time to make it a full day.
